How It Started

It All Began in 1962

Back in 1962, our family started tapping the maples on this ridge near Clarenville — a handful of buckets, a wood fire, and a lot of patience. What began as a way to put a little sweetness on the family table slowly grew into something more, one tree and one boil at a time.

Making maple syrup in Newfoundland has always been a rare thing, and that's part of why we've kept at it. It's slow, honest work — hauling sap, tending the fire, watching the steam roll — and there's no shortcut worth taking. We do it the way it's always been done here, because that's what makes it taste the way it does.

The Family Tradition

Passed Down Through Three Generations

Three generations of our family have worked this sugar bush. The same trails walked in 1962 get walked every season, and the know-how — when to tap, how to read the sap run, when the syrup is just right — gets handed down the same way it always has: side by side, boots in the snow.

Kids who once tagged along carrying buckets now run the evaporator, and their kids are learning the ropes too. It's not just a business to us. It's the family story, boiled down.

  • 1962The first taps go into the maples on the ridge, and the first family boil begins.
  • Second generationThe kids grow into the work — tapping, hauling, and tending the fire.
  • TodayThe third generation keeps the tradition alive, tap to table, right here in Clarenville.

Our Own Sugar Bush, Our Own Evaporator

Everything starts in our sugar bush near Clarenville. We tap our own maple trees, gather the sap ourselves, and boil it down in our on-site evaporator — no middle steps, no mystery. The syrup on your pancakes was sap in our trees, made right here in a tradition you'll rarely find anywhere else in Newfoundland.

You can taste the difference that slow work makes. And if you'd like to see it for yourself, walk the trails on one of our sugar bush tours and follow the sap from tap line to evaporator to jug.
